Get a Front-Row Seat to the Secret Lives of Birds!

Thatched roof structure with bamboo walls, open window view of trees and a hummingbird feeder outside.

About:

This structure gives both casual visitors and seasoned birders the opportunity to observe birds in their natural habitat without disrupting their behavior or routines. Birds are extremely sensitive to movement and noise. At the slightest hint of a nearby human, they may scatter. The bird blind provides cover, which helps human visitors become part of the landscape instead of intruders in it.  For the best experience:

  • Approach slowly and quietly.
  • Wear neutral colors to blend in with your surroundings.
  • Use binoculars if you have them.
  • Be patient. Birds often reward stillness with presence.

Visitors to LRPPG  can view birds from two heights, one lower and one elevated, to make sure all visitors get a chance to see our birds.  Before your visit, check out who you might see at our bird blind:

Once there, add your own observations on our visitor log!

What Makes Our Bird Blind So Special?

Our bird blind isn’t just a tool for observing wildlife. It’s also a part of our restoration story! During your visit, we encourage you to examine the materials that make up the structure. We’ve carefully repurposed invasive plants, which would normally harm the environment, into something that benefits it.

The Mexican fan palms (Washingtonia robusta) that make up the roof were collected on-site at LRPPG during regular habitat maintenance. These palms are known to quickly grow and dominate riparian habitats, like that along Sunnyslope Creek.

The walls of the structure are made of giant reed (Arundo donax), which was removed from nearby stretches of the Santa Ana River. This fast-growing invasive plant outcompetes native vegetation along waterways and reduces nesting and foraging value of habitat.

This project truly highlights our overall goal of ecological balance and sustainability at LRPPG! We encourage family and friends to come out and observe our feathery friends.
